Breakdown of electrical insulation often leads to catastrophic equipment failure. Electrical insulation has a limited life and breakdown is usually preceded by partial discharge such as corona, arcing and tracking. This is detectable with purpose designed ultrasonic detection instruments and provides invaluable early indication of developing problems for predictive maintenance programmes.

An SDT170 or SDT 270 ultrasonic detector with airborne ultrasound sensors is a versatile maintenance tool that can help with the detection, identification and location of partial discharge and other electrical effects that may not be detectable with other methods.

It is particularly useful for metal clad switchgear and other LV and MV closed electrical panels where it is not possible or safe to open up for on-line inspections. The ultrasound that escapes from small openings is sufficient for detection of unwanted discharge activity.

Martec supplies the SDT range of ultrasonic detectors together with the appropriate optional accessories and specialised training necessary for electrical inspections, and in addition provides ultrasonic inspection services to utilities, mines and industry in order to detect incipient insulation faults prior to breakdown to permit preventative action to be taken.
