The mode of application is generally identified as testing, condition assessment or condition monitoring.
Testing involves the application of some form of stress and evaluating the response of the test object to the applied stress.
Condition Assessment is usually a periodic (or interval based) intervention to determine the health of an item of plant without the application of stress. This may be either on-line or off-line. Condition assessment is usually cost effective because one piece of equipment is used for assessing many items of plant.
Condition Monitoring is usually a continuous on-line technique for monitoring the condition of an item of plant in real time whilst in normal service. Condition monitoring is usually only applied to more critical items of plant since although it is more informative, it is also usually more costly than condition assessment.
