Ultrasonic Detector, Marine Hatch Testing

In situations where seal integrity (or “tightness”) is important, but volume is too great to permit application of pressure or vacuum to test the seal for defects, ultrasonics offers a unique solution.

The method consists of flooding the interior of the volume with ultrasound waves. Due to their very small wavelength these can penetrate tiny holes.

Current sector uses include:

Automobile – Wind and water leaks on cars and trucks

Aeronautics – Cabin sealing integrity of aircraft

Transportation – Cabin sealing integrity on trucks, buses, trains

Buildings – Integrity of building envelopes

Military – Submarines, aircraft, space vehicles

Nuclear – Containment wall integrity

Marine Industry –  Hatch cover ultrasonic tightness testing and on board condition monitoring.

The size of the leak orifice does not have an influence on the ability to locate it as the ultrasonic detector will detect these leaks through microscopic holes and hairline cracks.

This same method will work on any volume or air tight capacity i.e. autoclaves, vessels, containers, appliances, cold rooms, etc. The only requirement is the ability to place a small ultrasonic transmitter inside the volume. There is no pressure or vacuum required.

Other than supplying the SDT range of ultrasonic detectors throughout Southern African and neighbouring country markets, Martec also provides a service for customers who cannot justify purchase of their own equipment. Using an ultrasonic detector on the outside of the volume, a Martec inspector can quickly perform a seal integrity  test (tightness test)and pinpoint the source of defects that could become potential sites of water, air or gas leaks or wind noise.
